Taxes
Tax options let you apply percentage-based taxes to menu items. You create taxes at the chain level, then assign them to categories or individual items across all your locations.
How Tax Inheritance Works
Taxes follow a hierarchy — items inherit from their category unless overridden:
- Item override — If a menu item has its own tax set, that takes priority
- Category tax — If no item override, the item inherits its category's tax
- No tax — If neither the item nor the category has a tax assigned, no tax is applied
This means you can set a tax once on a category and have every item inside it automatically use that tax, while still being able to override specific items when needed.
Creating a Tax Option
- Go to Restaurant → Taxes
- Click Create tax option
- Fill in the details:
- Name — A label for this tax (e.g., "Sales Tax", "VAT")
- Rate — The tax percentage (e.g., 8.5%)
- Description — Optional notes about the tax
- Active — Toggle whether this tax is currently enabled
- Click Save
The tax option is now available to assign to categories and menu items across all your locations.
Editing a Tax Option
- Go to Restaurant → Taxes
- Click the edit button on the tax you want to modify
- Update the name, rate, description, or active status
- Click Save
Changes apply everywhere the tax is used.
Deleting a Tax Option
- Go to Restaurant → Taxes
- Click the delete button on the tax you want to remove
- Type the tax option name to confirm deletion
Assigning Taxes to Categories
- Go to Restaurant → Menus and select a location
- Open the category you want to edit (or create a new one)
- In the Taxes section, select which tax applies
- Save the category
All items in that category will inherit this tax unless they have their own override.
Overriding Taxes on a Menu Item
- Go to Restaurant → Menus and open a menu item
- Navigate to the Taxes section
- Toggle Override inherited taxes
- Select a different tax or leave it blank for no tax
- Save the menu item
Enabling and Disabling Taxes
You can toggle a tax option's active status without deleting it. Disabled taxes remain in the system but are not applied to orders. Edit the tax and toggle the Active switch.
Searching and Sorting
The taxes list supports:
- Search — Filter taxes by name
- Filter — View all, active only, or disabled only
- Sort — Order by newest, oldest, alphabetically (A–Z / Z–A), or by rate (high to low / low to high)
