Categories
Categories group your menu items into sections that customers browse when ordering — like Appetizers, Mains, Drinks, or Desserts.
Creating a Category
- Open a menu from the menu editor
- Click Add Category
- Enter a name and optional description

- Assign a tax rate
- Set available hours
- Click Create Category
Category Image
You can upload an image to represent the category. Supported formats are PNG, JPG, WebP, and GIF (max 2MB). The image is shown to customers when browsing the menu.
Sub-Categories
Categories can be nested under a parent category to create a two-level hierarchy. For example, a "Drinks" category could have sub-categories like "Hot Drinks" and "Cold Drinks".
To nest a category, select a parent from the Parent category dropdown when creating or editing it.
Availability
Each category has an availability toggle in the menu editor. When off, the category name shows a strikethrough and an Unavailable badge, and the entire category — including every item inside it — is hidden from the menu.
Categories don't have a 86 mode. They're either visible or hidden. To mark individual items sold out mid-service while keeping the rest of the category available, use the 86 page.
Taxes
Each category has a tax assignment that applies to all items within it. When you create a new item, it inherits the category's tax rate by default. You can override the tax on individual items if needed.
Available Hours
Set when this category is available for ordering. By default, categories are available all day. Use time slots to restrict availability — for example, a "Breakfast" category might only be available from 7:00 to 11:00.
Special Instructions
By default, categories inherit the special instructions setting from their menu. If you need a different behavior for a specific category, enable the override toggle and set it to allowed or disallowed.
Items within the category will then inherit from this category-level setting instead.
Reordering
In the menu editor, drag categories by the handle to change their display order. Items within categories can also be reordered.
