86'd Items

Mark menu items and modifiers as sold out during service.

The 86 page lets you quickly mark menu items and modifiers as sold out during service. "86" is restaurant industry shorthand for something the kitchen can no longer serve.

86 vs. Availability

Menu items, categories, and modifiers each have two separate controls. They do different things — pick the one that matches the situation:

  • Availability (set in the menu editor) — When off, the item, category, or modifier is hidden from the menu entirely. Use this for things customers shouldn't see at all right now — a seasonal dish that's out of season, a category you haven't launched yet.
  • 86 (set on this page) — The item stays visible on the menu but is disabled so customers can't add it to an order. Use this when you've run out of something mid-service but want customers to know it's normally on the menu.
Categories can only be hidden with the availability toggle. There is no 86 mode for categories — they're either visible or hidden.

Marking an Item 86'd

Each item row has a split button with two options:

  • 86 for today — The item is marked sold out until end of day. It's automatically restored overnight so you don't have to remember to turn it back on tomorrow.
  • 86 indefinitely — The item stays 86'd until someone manually restores it. Use this when you're out of an ingredient for more than a day.

Once 86'd, the row shows a badge — 86'd today (yellow) or 86'd indefinitely (red) — and the split button is replaced by a Restore button. Click Restore to make the item orderable again.

86'ing Modifiers

Items with modifiers show a chevron on the right of the row. Click the row to open a panel listing every modifier attached to the item. Each modifier has its own 86 / Restore control and can be nested several levels deep — the panel walks the full modifier tree.

Use this when you're out of a specific option (e.g. oat milk) but the parent item (e.g. latte) should stay orderable.

Single-Location View

When a location is selected, items are grouped by menu and then by category. You can:

  • 86 items individually with the split button on each row
  • Search by item or category name using the search bar
  • Expand and collapse categories to navigate large menus

Categories and items load on demand as you expand them, so large menus stay fast.

All-Locations View

When viewing all locations, the page uses an accordion layout — locations at the top level, then menus, categories, and items inside. Expand a location to drill in.

Visual Cues

  • Items hidden with the availability toggle appear dimmed with a strikethrough — they're shown here for reference only.
  • Items that are 86'd are highlighted and carry a 86'd today or 86'd indefinitely badge.
Use the Expand All and Collapse All options in the dropdown menu to quickly navigate large menus.
To hide something from the menu entirely instead of 86'ing it, see Menu Items or Categories for the availability toggle in the menu editor.
